Door sensors use physical or magnetic switches to determine that a door has been opened. Fire detectors sense temperature rise or smoke presence. The presence of moving persons can be detected by infrared beams or passive infrared detectors.
Control panels contain the brains of the system. They process signals from detectors, and activate annunciators and/or dialers if appropriate.
Annunciators can include horns and sirens, as well as flashing lights.
Dialers are plugged into the telephone system. When activated by the control panel, they dial one or more pre-programmed numbers (a neighbor, the security company, the police) and play a voice or digital announcement.
